Volkswagen has released the new ID.4 AWD electric SUV, which will be shipped to US dealers in the fourth quarter. Equipped with two electric motors, a maximum of 295 horsepower and an estimated 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds for the AWD Pro model, ID.4 AWD provides performance and all-weather traction, with a starting suggested retail price of $43,675.

ID.4 AWD combines the standard ID.4 permanent magnet synchronous motor on the rear axle with a new asynchronous motor on the front axle; unlike the traditional all-wheel drive system, there is no mechanical connection between the axles.

The maximum output produced by the rear unit is 201 horsepower and 228 pound-feet of torque, while the maximum output produced by the front unit is 107 horsepower and 119 pound-feet of torque. The maximum output power of the system is 295 horsepower. Each motor is connected to the wheels through a differential and a single-speed gearbox.

The rear motor handles standard driving situations, allowing the front motor to engage only when needed, such as when ID.4 detects wheel slip in any corner. The motor reacts faster than any internal combustion engine-within a few hundredths of a second-so the driver will never notice these changes.

Both motors are connected to the rest of the vehicle through the vehicle dynamics manager to balance performance and battery efficiency. Like the rear-wheel drive ID.4, the vehicle dynamics manager works closely with electronic stability control (ESC) to control when the front axle motors should engage. It also handles a differential based on XDS+ braking to optimize maneuverability during high-speed cornering: it gently brakes the wheels on the inside of the curve, thus turning the car slightly to the radius as needed.

Drivers can choose the driving mode to decide how comfortable or sporty they want ID.4 AWD. This will affect the steering weight, electric motor and provide five mode options: Eco, Comfort, Sport, Custom and Traction.

Eco mode is designed for efficient driving. Comfort mode ensures a high degree of driving comfort, sports adds a touch of excitement by allowing the front motor to be engaged, and customization allows the driver to blend between comfort and sports. The traction mode is specially designed for driving on loose or slippery roads. It has permanent all-wheel drive and can reach a speed of about 12 mph.

ID.4 AWD Pro can reach 60 mph from a standstill in approximately 5.7 seconds. When the brake trailer is used, the towing capacity increases to 2,700 pounds, which exceeds the 2,200 pounds of the rear-wheel drive version 1. ID.4 AWD is equipped with standard towing hook and electric heating windshield. All other functions of the rear-wheel drive ID.4 are used in the AWD model, including its 82 kWh battery pack, spacious interior space and IQ.DRIVE driver assistance technology package.

All ID.4 models can also receive wireless software updates to add features in the future. The EPA estimates the AWD Pro range is 249 miles, and the AWD Pro S (declared) is 240 miles.

ID.4 AWD has two decorations. The initial manufacturer suggested retail price of ID.4 AWD Pro is US$43,675, which is currently the lowest initial suggested retail price of all-wheel drive battery electric vehicles in the United States. The suggested retail price of ID.4 AWD Pro S is US$48,175. The optional Gradient package (for AWD Pro S) adds 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels and further design differentiation. The destination for all ID.4 models is $1,195.

All ID.4 models are eligible for a potential federal tax credit of up to $7,500, and include three years of unlimited Electrify America network public DC fast charging at no additional cost. You can book ID.4 AWD on vw.com/id4.

Unfortunately, these costs are so high in Europe (considering currency and taxes). Given that the price of gasoline is $1.80/liter (in Ireland and Germany), you would imagine people flocking to electric cars, but they are too expensive.
