Manchester, New Hampshire-Last week, a group of third-year students from the Spark Institute of Advanced Technology-known as "juniors" in most high schools-visited Granite State Manufacturing and quickly realized that they had seen what they were doing. Things learned.

When George Cacace of Granite State Manufacturing led them to tour the factory, the students saw CNC machines running "G and M" codes, and they learned how to program during the manufacturing process course. They realized that because of their current college-level blueprint reading course, they were able to decipher the blueprint they were looking at. They were able to have a conversation with George about the precision geometric tolerances and the quality control measures used by the factory.

"We have to see that all the concepts we have learned in the past two years are realized," said student John Larochelle. "This is amazing."

This visit is part of Discovery Wednesday, and this concept has been incorporated into the Spark Academy plan since the school opened in 2019. The idea is to expose students to various future career options through visits, lectures and field trips. Denis Mailloux, Spark’s director, said: “Last year, COVID-19 stopped the first-hand experience, but we are slowly rebuilding them.” He continued, “Talk to the employees of Granite State Manufacturing It really opened our eyes to our third grade students to understand how valuable their classroom experience is. They are very excited." Several students from Xinghuo prepared their resumes before the visit and decided to apply for an internship on the same day. Many of them have obtained SOLIDWORKS industry certification through Spark Academy, and have earned double credits through Run Start and Early College courses in CAD, robotics, and programmable logic controllers (PLC).

Spark Academy is a public charter high school located on the campus of Manchester Community College. They currently provide access to the Academy’s Advanced Manufacturing Program, with the goal of training the skilled technicians that New Hampshire’s industry currently urgently needs. They have also developed a network security approach for students, and will add other approaches as they grow.

Spark is looking for industry leaders who are interested in working with schools to provide students with the experience of exploring Wednesday and other opportunities. They are now also accepting applications for the 2022-23 school year. Visit their website www.sparkacademynh.org for more information.
